Hair care, drying your head. How to properly dry your hair after washing

You know that the secret to having luxurious hair is not only knowing how to wash it correctly (World Without Harm tells you how to wash your hair correctly), but also knowing how to dry your hair properly. And it is precisely about proper hair drying that we want to tell you today.

Why know how to dry your hair properly?

Why complicate your life - someone might say, isn’t it just enough to dry your hair with a towel, dry it with a hairdryer for 5 minutes and that’s it? The question is closed. That’s how it is, however, you shouldn’t be surprised that after such careless and improper drying of your hair, it becomes brittle, dull and even needs treatment. Whereas, if you dry your hair correctly, you can save time on further styling, and even without special products such as, it will be shiny and healthy.

Natural hair drying

According to experts and trichologists - natural way to dry hair is the best, and this is how you should dry your hair as often as possible. No matter how fashionable your thermal devices are, as a result of their use, your hair becomes dry, its structure is disrupted, and its fragility and sensitivity increases.

However, even the natural way is worth drying your hair correctly, otherwise it will be of no use. So, you should not dry your hair in the open air under gusts of wind, albeit warm and summer. This method weighs down the hair roots and can cause hair loss in the future (find out). In addition, if the breeze is not very warm, you risk catching a cold and getting sick.

To make wet hair dry faster, after you finish washing your hair, gently squeeze it with your fingers to remove any remaining water. If you want, you can use a towel to dry your hair to blot wet ends, but the towel must be warm - heat it with an iron or hang it on the radiator before doing this. Cover your hair with a towel and wrap it tightly in it. If necessary, you can replace the wet towel with a dry one.

When drying your hair without a towel, gently lift the hair strands at the roots with your fingers - this will add volume to your hairstyle. You should not dry your hair in direct sunlight, but it is better to start combing it after it has dried.

Blow drying hair

However, if you are late for work in the morning, you don’t have time to wait 1-1.5 hours for your hair to dry (the longer it is, the longer it takes to dry). In this case, you can use a hairdryer. In order to reduce its aggressive effect on the hair structure, use special heat-protective products and comb your hair, dividing it into several strands. You should not dry your hair with streams of hot air; it is better to set the mode for supplying cold air streams, while directing them along the hair growth line, starting from the roots and ending with the tips, using a special nozzle to concentrate the air streams. Hold the hairdryer at a distance of 8-10 centimeters from your head, and direct the air streams, distributing them evenly over the entire surface of your head. Use a brush to lift each strand at the roots - this will give your hair volume. By the way, if you want to achieve long-lasting and voluminous styling, dry your hair in the direction opposite to where you plan to style your hair. And, in order to avoid drying out, leave the strands slightly under-dried.

Of course, to dry your hair with a hairdryer, you should choose the right device itself - this has been written about in detail. But, even if you choose the most harmless hair dryer, do not forget that hair can and should sometimes be dried naturally, for its own good.

Did you know that you should dry your hair? naturally much more dangerous than a hairdryer? And the fact that going to bed with a wet head means shortening the path to split ends to a minimum? Cambridge University scientist, trichologist Tim Moore spent several years researching the hair drying process and eventually wrote detailed instructions how to do it correctly.

Why is drying your hair without a hair dryer harmful?

Dr. Moore says that “natural drying” is the worst thing you can do to your hair. He explains it this way. Contact of hair with water from the first seconds at the molecular level changes its structure, which, by the way, is not the simplest. Each hair is a complex structure. First of all, it has an outer protective layer (cuticle), consisting of several layers of keratinized elongated cells, the so-called hair scales.

The main part of the hair is the cortex, formed from pure protein, carotene. It is responsible for the volume of hair (determined genetically) and its color (chemical processes of pigment change occur in the cortex). The central element of the hair (though not all of them - for example, it is not found in vellus hairs) is the medulla, the brain substance responsible for thermal conductivity (our strands heat up or cool down depending on the temperature of the medulla).

What happens when we wash our hair or just wet our hair? Try to imagine yourself inside a house with a leaking roof: when we're talking about about hair, your role will be the cortex, and the cuticle will be a tile, through the gaps in which moisture penetrates inside. Due to water, the cortex swells and the hair increases in volume. This would be nice if it did not become very fragile and practically defenseless, because the cuticle scales, having softened, completely open.

The most important thing: the longer we leave our hair wet and the longer the contact with water lasts, the more it continues to swell, “stretching” the poor cuticle. At the same time, each wash followed by slow drying tests the protective layer of the hair over and over again, causing cracks to appear in the protective layer. Take pity on your hair, says Tim Moore: dry it immediately after washing.

The second terrible mistake he advises to avoid is going to bed with wet hair. Yes, in order to save time, we often go to bed as soon as we have washed our hair. By doing this, you can cause damage to your hair, the correction of which will take many months. What's the matter? In our sleep, we make involuntary movements, including crawling with our heads on the pillow - this friction is quite strong and can lead to thinning and brittle hair (in general, this is about the same as if you left the house with wet hair, pulling a hat over them).

By the way, weather conditions greatly influence the quality of drying: high humidity will instantly reduce all styling efforts to zero - use a heat-protective spray to reduce its impact on the hair ( read also: “Olive oil for skin and hair: 5 beauty life hacks”). Dr. Moore's tests showed that, as hard as it may be to believe, our hair feels best in winter - on a cold, clear day at zero degrees.

Regarding care products ( read also: “How Japanese women take care of their hair: 4 main life hacks”), the doctor is surprisingly loyal, advising you to focus on the average price category. He assures that both luxury and mass market products were tested in laboratory and field conditions. It turns out that "luxury expensive bottles" are not worth paying exorbitant prices for. As soon as you spend more than £30 on a product, the results plateau (we don’t entirely agree with this, because the price of more than two thousand rubles should at least have a placebo effect). Of course, super cheap products won't make your hair look great either. Summary: choose the “golden mean” ─ moving away from a mid-range brand (however, it’s still up to you to decide).

So, backed by knowledge, we set out to dry our hair in a new way - correctly and without harm:

In conditions of constant time pressure, when we barely have time to wash our hair, we try to quickly pick up a hairdryer. Slow down, Dr. Moore advises. First you need to carefully dry your hair with a towel: wrap it around your head, grabbing the length of the hair, and massage it lightly to absorb most of the excess moisture.

Combing wet hair is not recommended, but it is necessary to prepare it for drying. Under no circumstances do this with a brush or brushing! Take only a comb or comb with large, sparse teeth in your hands and slowly move from the ends to the roots (in exactly the opposite direction). If your hair continues to become very tangled, try the following: run a blast of cold air through your hair with a hairdryer for a few minutes and use your fingers to separate it.

Using heat tools on wet hair can have disastrous consequences for your hair. Imagine what happens to water at maximum high temperatures: It turns into steam, which expands. Drops of moisture remaining inside the hair can literally burst into flames when heated, practically incinerating its contents. There is only one piece of advice here: use heat-protective sprays after drying and before styling and avoid temperatures above 210 degrees - this greatly harms both their color and quality.

They say blow drying your hair is harmful. This is true for painted ones. Exhausted by procedures of little use (hydrogen peroxide), in addition, dry heating is planned. How to properly blow dry your hair is not an easy science. Long hairstyle gets confused, the short one is difficult to grab. Let's see today how to use a hairdryer correctly.

Any hairdryer will make it easier to dry your hair. Avoid old-fashioned methods, as in the film “7 Brides of Corporal Zbruev” (using an iron for ironing clothes). The rest is hard to do wrong. Some recommend starting the process from the ends, going to the head; professional hairdressers do the opposite. Comb used:

  1. We attach the concentrator to the hair dryer. Some people call it a spout or a nozzle. We found a flat comb, pry a strand from below, near the head. At a low temperature, we place the nose on top of the curls, together with the comb we pull to the side until the length of the hair ends. Start with a gentle regime and move on to a tougher one as needed.
  2. I found a round brush at hand to lightly curl my hair. This is done with a spout attachment. The strand is taken from below and slightly twisted onto the brush. When moving your hand away, try to turn the comb in the direction opposite to the one in which it tends to rotate under the influence of the unwinding strand. The nose runs parallel to the comb when pressed.

Please note: the concentrator should be pressed against the strand the length of the slit. Runs parallel to the comb. Otherwise, the strand will lie unevenly, and the conditions for uniform drying will not be met.

Dyed hair is washed with a special shampoo. For example, Avedo Color Conserve. The series conditioner is suitable for maintenance. Products protect colored hair. To make your hair look voluminous, add Phomollient Avedo styling foam. The composition is rubbed lightly until white and applied to the hair with spread fingers. After the blow-dry procedure, use Pure Abundance to fix the result of your work. Spray lightly above the head at a distance of 20 - 30 cm.

Short hair... First, use a brush. The comb goes down the hair, the teeth of the hair dryer relentlessly follow. It's good when the result is visible in the mirror. If you need to quickly dry a man's or woman's short hair, you can use your own hand. With lightning-fast movements of the outstretched palm, we lift the hair and pour over it with a hot stream.

We heard that you need to use a hairdryer at a distance of 20, 30 cm from your head, you will have to stock up on dragon patience to complete the procedure. The methods above work much faster. Professional hairdressers divide the scalp into three or four zones and dry them sequentially:

  1. Rear (rear part).
  2. Two sidewalls.
  3. Crown part.

The last segment is sometimes missing; the hair dryer sequentially processes the sections in the order indicated by the list. To divide the scalp into parts, they use special clips, which are unlikely to be found in every home. Is it possible to dry your hair with a hairdryer in the absence of equipment, we cannot say. The process continues until an acceptable result is achieved. Please note: a cheap hair dryer can wind a couple of hairs through the grille with its motor. Exercise caution when using the device.

Hair dryer diffuser

Of course, you've heard about the diffuser. A contraption that does the opposite of a concentrator. The air is dispersed and special plastic teeth are used to fluff the hair. This is what a hair dryer diffuser looks like:

  1. Imagine a mushroom whose cap is turned upside down, hollow, and the stem too.
  2. In the resulting deflection there are a billion holes through which it leaks when the hair dryer is working.
  3. A dozen and a half spikes stick out from above, hollow inside, and there are oblong slits at the ends on all sides.

It turns out that air is supplied inside the hairstyle, producing a shock effect. It turns out that the strands are blown from all sides, and a high speed of the process is achieved. The best way to quickly dry your hair with a hairdryer.

Using a diffuser, grab your hair from below and from above, as if combing it with a large comb. It quickly gives a positive effect for the upper strands; it will take longer to tinker with the lower ones. Keep the temperature moderate. According to some reports, from unjustifiably high fever dandruff forms.

Hair dryer brush attachment

Not a nozzle, a type of hair dryer that allows air to penetrate the thickness of the hair. Made in the shape of a round brush, the device is often equipped with hair curlers. In the form of an additional nozzle. You can perm at the same time. This is difficult to do with typical gun hair dryers. Awesome, the Bosch PHA2661 comes with a hair straightening attachment. It turns out that you can curl it, but if you don’t like it, remove the effect.

To speed up the process, remove the brush teeth, drying will be faster. At a price of 1,650 rubles, the device looks attractive, considering its size, it will easily fit into a bag. You can buy a hair dryer as a travel option.

Air ionizer in hair dryer

Air ionization occurs in all devices. Provoked by two types of influences:

  • the presence of strong alternating electromagnetic fields;
  • high temperature parts.

That's why computers and microwaves are considered harmful. The ions formed have a positive charge, causing drowsiness, reducing performance and immunity. Has a negative effect on health. In the case of a hairdryer, we voluntarily shower ourselves with a stream of harmful ions.

To compensate for the damage, an electrode is built inside that produces negative particles. When ions of opposite signs collide, both annihilate each other, if environmental conditions allow. Negative particles affect the drying process, water penetrates into the hair (kept on the surface). The hairstyle becomes voluminous, like “after a thunderstorm.” Hair gains vitality, static electricity stops accumulating.

Non-standard functions of hair dryers

It is not allowed to use a corded hairdryer in the bathroom; many are equipped with batteries. Some operate from a special gas cartridge. Braun sells for 500 rubles each. There is nothing better in a cold apartment than drying your hair with a hairdryer in the bathroom; the listed devices will allow you to act in your chosen style.

The supermarket's household appliances sector will delight you with models with step-by-step heating/speed control (cold-hot, fast-slow). Digital devices will be presented that flexibly set parameters at the owner’s request with an accuracy of one degree. Convenient for capricious hairstyles. You don't need a mask for over-dried hair.

Exotic options available. A hair dryer for drying hair costs 600 rubles and resembles a soft astronaut’s hat. Silver with a hose. Air is supplied inside and there may be a built-in ionizer.

The wall-mounted hair dryer has a unique property: it is always connected to the network. The devices are recommended for hotels with increased comfort, so that the owner is confident in the safety of the guests. Experienced workers will connect the device correctly, you don’t have to worry about safety. The cost of the device cannot be called low; for a five-star hotel with prices of 6,000 rubles/day it will pay for itself in short term, write off depreciation as depreciation so as not to pay taxes.

There are several tips posted online on how to dry your hair without a hairdryer; words would not be considered practical. A Dyson vacuum cleaner with a cyclone effect will provide the desired warm flow. We are not talking about ceramic air heaters. There is no need to be afraid of dust; it remains in the filters!

From practical advice: Try placing a towel on the radiator before going to the bathroom. After wringing out your hair, wrap the turban around your head. It will help dry your hair just as well as a hairdryer. Cheap waffle towels are even better, absorbing moisture better.

Use a bathtub coil to heat, the fabric will no longer be dry. It is much better to find a battery, go to the nearest hardware store, and buy a used hair dryer for 200-300 rubles. Throw away the device as soon as necessary and give it to good hands. It's really not serious to try to save money on appearance 10 dollars. If your husband is greedy and doesn’t give you money, let him buy a hair dryer. You can dry your hair if you act carefully. If he asks why the device is needed, tell him - just in case.

The product costs 1000 rubles, you need to use it carefully. Gives a jet temperature of 100 degrees Celsius and above. Keep it away from your head and use it carefully. The thing is needed, the paint is being dried, the electronic equipment is being assembled.

Naturally drying your hair is a great way to give your hair a break from the harmful effects of heat devices. However, in this case, it is sometimes difficult to achieve even and smooth curls. Luckily, there are a few tricks that can help you get straight hair, even if you don't blow-dry it. If you have naturally straight or only slightly wavy hair, try simply brushing it every five minutes while it dries. If your hair is curly, roll it tightly with large rollers to straighten it, or wrap it around your head and pin it up for a straight, but voluminous hairstyle.

Steps

Dry straight or wavy hair naturally

Pat your hair dry with a soft towel. After brushing your hair, get out of the shower and gently pat your hair dry with a towel. Squeeze the hair from roots to ends, but do not rub it too hard to avoid damaging it. Continue blotting your hair until it is just slightly damp.

    • Microfiber towels or even old T-shirts are a great way to gently dry your hair.
  1. If your hair is naturally curly, treat it with a straightening balm or cream. To tame your hair's natural frizz, work evenly through your hair with a styling product such as a straightening cream, spray, conditioner or hair oil. This will help your hair stay straight as it dries, and will also make it smoother and shinier when drying is complete.

    • There are many factors that affect the effectiveness of a particular product specifically for your hair (for example, it may depend on the texture and thickness of the hair, the degree of its waviness, and the characteristics of the individual chemical processes of the scalp). Remember that sometimes you need to go through trial and error before you find the perfect hair care products.
    • Some products are designed for use with thermal devices (such as straightening irons or hair dryers).
  2. Use a comb to position your hair exactly in the position you want it to dry. Depending on the desired hairstyle, divide your hair with a central or side parting. Don't forget to comb your bangs forward or back (depending on your specific hairstyle).

If you need extra volume, lift your hair at the roots with bobby pins. By lifting your hair at the roots with bobby pins, you will force it to dry in this position. This is a great way to add volume around the face and on the top of the head, where hair sometimes tends to become too slick. For best results, try using plastic bobby pins.

    • If you are worried that the hairpins may leave kinks in your hair, use a paper layer (from square scraps of paper napkins) between the hair and the hairpin.
    • If you want to reduce the volume and get a sleek hairstyle, you can comb your hair behind your ears and secure it with hairpins.
  3. Smooth your hair every five minutes with a wet detangling brush (if you have one). A detangling brush (such as a Wet Brush) is designed to glide gently through wet hair without causing tangles or damage. If you have one, use it to comb your hair every five minutes or so until it's as straight as possible. Continue doing this until your hair is completely dry.

    • If desired, you can also use a wide-toothed flat comb.
  4. Apply hairspray to the brush and use it to smooth out frizz. Once your hair is dry, apply a little hairspray to the bristles of the brush. Then comb your hair around your face and on the top of your head with it to tame frizz that has begun to stand out from the general mass during the drying process.

    • Don't forget to wash your hair brush afterwards to remove any traces of hairspray.

Did you know? Regular towels can be too rough on your hair, causing damage over time.

Treat your hair with styling product. Look for a hair smoothing or straightening product that doesn't require heat to activate. If your hair is just a little frizzy, you may only need a light mousse or hair cream, but if you have bouncy curls, you'll need a heavier product, such as a styling gel, to control your hair.

Divide your hair into sections. You will need one section for all curlers. The total number of sections will depend on the thickness of your hair and the size of the curlers, but most likely you will need at least six of them (for three curlers on both sides).

    • If you have tight curls or very thick hair, you may need to section it into eight or more sections.
  5. Curl each section of hair tightly using large plastic rollers. Place the curlers from below under the ends of one section of hair and then curl the hair tightly around them. Curl your hair all the way up to your scalp and then secure it with roller clips or bobby pins.

    • Large curlers usually have a diameter of 4–5 cm and can be found in stores selling beauty and cosmetics products.
    • Remember that to straighten your hair, you need to roll it very tightly with curlers.
    • The angle at which you curl your hair affects the amount of volume you'll get as a result. If you need extra volume, pull your hair away from your head before using curlers.
  6. Leave the curlers on your hair for 2-3 hours or overnight. Allow hair to dry completely in curlers. This may only take 2-3 hours, but if your hair is very thick, the drying process may take longer.

    • If you're unsure about how long your hair will take to dry, it's a smart idea to go to bed with curlers on. To make the curlers dry faster, it makes sense to initially just dampen your hair with a spray bottle instead of washing it.
  7. Remove the curlers and style your hair with your fingers. When your hair is dry, remove the curlers. Use your fingers to straighten the strands and use hairspray or a light oil to tame frizz.
